Wedding and Marriage Registration in Georgia for Foreigners: Everything You Need to Know

We explain the process of marriage registration in Georgia for foreigners.
Official marriage in Georgia is a fast and easy way for foreign couples to legalize their relationship. With minimal documents, one-day registration, and a marriage certificate with apostille recognized in more than 130 countries worldwide, Georgia has become one of the most popular countries for getting married.

In this guide, we will explain how marriage registration in Georgia for foreigners works, what documents are required, how much it costs, and why thousands of international couples choose Georgia for their wedding and legal marriage.

Why choose Georgia for marriage registration?

Fast processing: marriage registration takes only 1–2 working days.
Minimal paperwork: only passports are required for marriage registration.
International recognition: the marriage certificate with apostille is accepted in most countries of Europe, Asia, CIS, USA, Canada, and many others.
Beautiful wedding locations: besides signing at the House of Justice, you can also have a romantic wedding ceremony at a winery, by the sea, or in the mountains.

What documents are required to get married in Georgia?

The list of documents for foreigners is as short as possible:
  • Passports of both partners (the same ones you will use to enter Georgia).
  • Two witnesses — must be adults, can be of any gender.
  • If you were previously married, you will need a divorce certificate or court decision, marriage certificate and death certificate of the previous spouse (if applicable).
  • If these documents were issued in Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan, Belarus, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, or Uzbekistan, you only need to bring the originals.
  • If issued in other countries, they must have an apostille.
  • For court divorce decisions, it must be clearly stated that the decision has entered into legal force.
  • 📌Important: No certificate of marital status, Georgian residence permit, or visas are required.

How does the marriage registration process in Georgia work?

Step 1. Preparing the Documents:

  • Your passports (and divorce documents, if applicable) must be translated into Georgian by a licensed translator at a notary in Georgia.
  • You must bring the originals of your passports and any divorce papers.
  • Passport translation usually takes 30 minutes to 1.5 hours, depending on the workload.
  • Two witnesses are required. If your witnesses are not Georgian citizens, their passports must also be translated.
  • Divorce documents may take 1 hour to 1 working day to translate, depending on language and number of pages.
💡 With our agency: You send us scanned passport copies online, and we prepare the translations before your arrival. For divorce documents, we also prepare in advance, but originals must be shown to a notary in Georgia after arrival.

Step 2. Submitting the Application for Marriage Registration

On working days, you can go to the House of Justice with your translated documents and submit the application.
Bring the original passports of both partners and witnesses.
If your witnesses are Georgian citizens or have Georgian residence permits, only their ID number is required.
During submission, you can choose between:
  • Simple signing (without ceremony) at the House of Justice
  • Official ceremony at a wedding hall
  • Outdoor wedding ceremony at a beautiful location
You must provide a valid Georgian phone number to receive SMS updates about your application.
  • For a simple signing without ceremony — SMS confirmation arrives in 3–6 hours.
  • For outdoor weddings or wedding halls — confirmation arrives 1–2 days before the ceremony date.

Step 3. Marriage Registration at the House of Justice

The marriage registration in Georgia and issuance of the marriage certificate in Georgian at the House of Justice usually takes 15 minutes to 1 hour, depending on queues. Witnesses you listed when submitting the application must be present, and you must bring your original passports.
  • If you chose a wedding hall ceremony: arrive 10–15 minutes before your scheduled time, that is enough.
  • If you booked a symbolic wedding in a scenic location: a registrar from the House of Justice can either come directly to your location or call you in advance to confirm the place and time.

Step 4. Marriage Certificate and Apostille in Georgia

  • After signing at the House of Justice, you can request several copies of your marriage certificate in Georgia (2–3–4 copies).
  • We recommend immediately submitting 1–2 copies for translation and apostille at the same desk where you registered your marriage.
  • Depending on the country where you plan to use your documents, you may need:
  • Apostille only
  • Translation + Apostille
  • Translation + Apostille + submission to your embassy in Georgia
⚠️ Rules sometimes change, so always confirm the requirements with the authority where you will submit the documents in your country.
  • Same-day apostille: If you submit the documents before 16:00 (sometimes 14:00 during busy periods), you can marry and receive the apostilled marriage certificate on the same day.
  • Apostille processing time in Georgia can vary from 1 to 8 working days, with express service costing more.
  • You will receive an SMS notification when your documents are ready or if extra clarification is required.

Important Recommendations:

  • Always check the spelling of your names and personal data in Georgian — from passport translations to the final marriage certificate.
  • Double-check the translation into your target language.
  • Our practice shows that around 10% of marriage certificates or translations in Georgia contain typos. Google Translate is not always reliable for Georgian.
  • That’s why our team carefully reviews every detail to ensure your documents are correct and ready on time.
With your consent, we keep a spare copy of your marriage certificate, so if needed, we can later send it to you with apostille or legalization (for example, for UAE) without requiring your presence.

Language and Support
  • Operators at the House of Justice usually speak Georgian, English, and sometimes Russian.
  • Wedding hall staff are similar, though in some cases they may only speak Georgian — something to keep in mind.
If you live in Georgia, have plenty of time, or local friends who can guide you, the process can be straightforward.
But if you want everything to go smoothly and guaranteed within 1–2 working days, we recommend choosing one of our all-inclusive marriage registration packages in Georgia.
