What documents are required to get married in Georgia?

The list of documents for foreigners is as short as possible:

Passports of both partners (the same ones you will use to enter Georgia).
Two witnesses — must be adults, can be of any gender.
If you were previously married, you will need a divorce certificate or court decision, marriage certificate and death certificate of the previous spouse (if applicable).
If these documents were issued in Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan, Belarus, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, or Uzbekistan, you only need to bring the originals.
If issued in other countries, they must have an apostille.
For court divorce decisions, it must be clearly stated that the decision has entered into legal force.

How does the marriage registration process in Georgia work?

Step 1. Preparing the Documents:

Your passports (and divorce documents, if applicable) must be translated into Georgian by a licensed translator at a notary in Georgia.
You must bring the originals of your passports and any divorce papers.
Passport translation usually takes 30 minutes to 1.5 hours, depending on the workload.
Two witnesses are required. If your witnesses are not Georgian citizens, their passports must also be translated.
Divorce documents may take 1 hour to 1 working day to translate, depending on language and number of pages.

Step 2. Submitting the Application for Marriage Registration

On working days, you can go to the House of Justice with your translated documents and submit the application.
Bring the original passports of both partners and witnesses.
If your witnesses are Georgian citizens or have Georgian residence permits, only their ID number is required.
During submission, you can choose between:

Simple signing (without ceremony) at the House of Justice
Official ceremony at a wedding hall

For a simple signing without ceremony — SMS confirmation arrives in 3–6 hours.
For outdoor weddings or wedding halls — confirmation arrives 1–2 days before the ceremony date.

Step 3. Marriage Registration at the House of Justice

The marriage registration in Georgia and issuance of the marriage certificate in Georgian at the House of Justice usually takes 15 minutes to 1 hour, depending on queues. Witnesses you listed when submitting the application must be present, and you must bring your original passports.

If you chose a wedding hall ceremony: arrive 10–15 minutes before your scheduled time, that is enough.
If you booked a symbolic wedding in a scenic location: a registrar from the House of Justice can either come directly to your location or call you in advance to confirm the place and time.

Step 4. Marriage Certificate and Apostille in Georgia

After signing at the House of Justice, you can request several copies of your marriage certificate in Georgia (2–3–4 copies).
